CREDIT UNION HELPS FEED FAMILIES

July 6, 2010

Statistics show 10% of Maine households, representing 150,000 people, experience food insecurity.  Several groups are found to be at greater risk of hunger in Maine including children, adults in low income families, disabled persons, persons with special needs, the elderly, and those living in rural regions and the inner cities of Maine’s largest urban places.  For this reason, Community Credit Union was proud to present the Trinity Jubilee Center with a check in the amount of $500.

“We have seen an increasing number of individuals using our services,” said Kim Wettlaufer, Executive Director for the Trinity Jubilee Center.   “This donation could not have come at a better time.” The Trinity Jubilee Center regularly addresses otherwise unmet personal, family, social and spiritual needs of people in the surrounding communities.  They assist people through the variety of programs they offer including a drop-in center, meals and food, refugee relations, child care, advocacy and intervention.  In a year, they serve 3,000 families with 35,000 plates of food, 35,000 diapers, 7,500 pounds of produce and 15,000 loaves of bread.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT FOR GARDEN GROWS

May 14, 2010

Even rain couldn't keep community members away as St. Mary's Health System, Lots to Gardens, Community Credit Union and the City of Lewiston held the first community planning meeting for a garden with the future home located on the corner of Pine and Howe Streets in Lewiston.

"It was amazing to see all the community members who came out to the meeting," said Jo-Ann Jackson, Garden Project Coordinator for Community Credit Union. "We weren't sure if anyone would show up, especially with the rain. The turnout was incredible." Community members, employees of Community Credit Union and employees and volunteers with Lots to Gardens joined together to spread the compost and prepare the garden for the initial planting stages. In addition, Community members were asked for their feedback and suggestions including a name for the garden, items to be grown in the garden and more. "We received excellent feedback from the community and hope to be able to build their feedback into our plan," said Jackson. "After all, it's not our Garden; it's a Community Garden."

Bridgette Bartlett, Education and Outreach Coordinator for St. Mary's Lots to Gardens program is a community garden veteran. She has helped to create more than a dozen gardens in the Lewiston area. "Community members were extremely enthusiastic at the prospect of a garden. They were ready to dig in and all work together. We actually got a lot of work done already, despite the rain.

Community members are invited to help with the upkeep of the garden. Volunteers will be working at the garden every Tuesday from 1:30pm-2:30pm. If there are any questions community members are encouraged to contact Bridgette at Lots to Gardens: 513-3844 or lotstogardens@gmail.com

CREDIT UNION HELPS CHILDREN FIND FAMILIES

May 13, 2010

Sadly, many children in Maine experience abuse and/or neglect from a person within their birth home. When the parents or caregivers cannot ensure a safe, stable environment for that child, the child may be placed in a foster home until the environment becomes safe again. If a judge determines that the home is once again safe, the child can return. When birth parents are unable to correct the issues that exist in their home to keep their child safe, a judge may terminate their parental rights. If this occurs, the child is then available for adoption. The child will stay in foster care until the child is adopted or reaches adulthood.

"Currently in Maine, 155 children are waiting for an adoptive family," said Grace Cleaves, Executive Director for A Family For ME. "This donation will help us connect potential adoptive parents with children whose only wish is to be a part of a family," A Family For ME is a collaborative program with the Maine Department of Health and Human Services and serves as Maine's statewide recruitment initiative for foster and adoptive families.

"The Credit Union participated in a contest held by the Maine Credit Union League to promote the benefits of a service called Shared Branching," said Kerry Wood, Executive Vice President for Community Credit Union. "Our prize for winning the contest was $500 to be donated to the charity of our choice. We allowed employees to vote for the organization and they chose A Family For ME. We have an employee who lived in many foster families throughout her life and from her stories have learned the values of this program and its services."

HEAD START RECEIVES DIAPER DONATION

February 1, 2010

After a very successful Diaper Drive was held at Community Credit Union, Androscoggin Head Start received 40 boxes of diapers. Board Members, Management, Employees and Members of Community Credit Union raised over $1,500 to help the children in our communities.

Board Members, Management and Employees started the Diaper Drive by making personal contributions that amounted to $480. In addition, they held a 50/50 raffle during the month of December to help raise additional funds to purchase diapers. The 50/50 raised over $1,000, providing $500 to purchase diapers and the other $500 going to one lucky member just in time for the holidays!

"It was a pleasure to provide these diapers to Head Start; they provide a well-needed service to our communities. A special thanks goes out to our employees and more importantly our members; it would not have been as successful without them." said Jennifer Hogan, Marketing/Business Development Director for Community Credit Union.

"We are very thankful for this wonderful donation. On a weekly basis, we go through more than 400 diapers, which you can imagine gets expensive" said Estelle Rubeinstein, Executive Director for Androscoggin Head Start.
